Final Diagnostic Essay

Course Reflection

My experience in English 111 was a good one. I’ve never really enjoyed written as

a kid,But now that I’ve matured as an adult I find I have a lot more to talk about. When

you’ve been through the up and downs of life you can become bitter or learn to conform.

Either way you’ll have a lot more to be say about issues and current events. I would have

preferred that some of the assignments are scheduled earlier in the schools semester. It

seemed like most of the assignments Had to be turned in at the end of the school year. By

this time I was worn down and not as focused. But I understand why the work is spaced out

like that; the instructor is trying to help you hone your writing skills, and techniques.

The most difficult assignment in my opinion was the, “I am who I am because” paper; it was

difficult for me to write about my personal life. Once I honestly wrote the way I

perceived myself, the whole process became easy. My favorite part of class was whenever

got into groups, it’s an interesting process we people collaborate on ideas. The group

becomes one and everybody starts to feed off each other, bouncing ideas and thoughts off

each other. These method is only effective when people listen and not just wait for the

turn to talk.

Overall the experience was satisfying, there’s a sense of accomplishment after

you’ve completed an essay or writing assignment. I’ve got a new found respect for writers,

I didn’t realize how difficult literary work can be. Sometime it seems to come natural and

other times you just can’t seem to focus. I’ve also got a new found respect for Bruce

Springsteen, he’s always been one of my favorite artists. But after I viewed the

documentary “Born to Run”, I realized just how great of a musician he truly is.

I met some friends and became more sociable, so that’s always a good thing. I was

older than most of my class mates. As a consequence there were times when I felt like a

social misfit, but I persevered. I‘d recommend this course to anyone interested in

attending TCC. Though I would encourage students to try and develop a love of writing

prior to enrolling in English 111. I personally enjoyed putting my ideas on paper.

Final Diagnostic Essay Draft

Final Diagnostic Essay Draft/Super Powers

I wish I had the ability to read a person's mind and know what they were thinking. When you're involved in a personal relationship or friendship, it’s difficult to distinguish who has you best interest at heart. Often time’s people hide behind politeness or political correctness, and never really say what they're thinking. It’s not socially accepted to utter the first thought that pops into your head. People are sometimes unfairly given derogatory labels if they're constantly being opinionated and judgmental. This holds true for both sexes, but especially so for females.
We as human beings sometimes use words to mask are true feelings. The expression, 'saying one thing but meaning another', effectively illustrates that point. People spend years together in friendships or marriages and never truly get to know each other. And sometimes when you discover the true essence of a person, you tend to look back in horror, because you can't believe how easily you were deceived. Hypocrisy exists in almost every type of relationship. Do as I say and not as I do seem to be the golden rule. Some people criticize your actions and behavior, but secretly wish they could be you. For example, two friends could be getting ready for a night on the town. One of the friends could make a snide remark about the others attire. The remark could be justified as an unbiased critique of one's attire, but the real intent of the remark could stem from envy. A lot of stress derives from the lack of communication in personal relationships. Knowing where you stand in a relationship or friendship is half the battle, well actually its most of the battle.
However if you were to take a different stance, these super powers could create a monster. A dark side lies deep inside of everyone; these emotions are suppressed due to laws, religion, and rationale. But when a person is left to his or her own vices, these suppressed desires can take over a person’s inhibitions. The temptation to abuse ones powers or in the case super powers would be difficult to pass up. Imagine all of the questions you ever had about someone, and the answers lied within you. Is he or she a sexist, bigot, pedophile, homophobe, homosexual, hypocrite, and etc? It would be hard not to act on these newly found revelations. How far would you go with it? Maybe you’d go so far as to commit blackmail, extort, or gossip to others about this new found information. Or better yet, maybe you would admit to the individual that you knew their little dark secret, as a way of taunting him or her.
There are several other ways to use this gift of minding reading to suit your own benefit, if you were a vindictive person. For example, if an individual was trying to attract someone of the opposite sex; but the person of the opposite sex was already involved with someone else. As a consequence you’d be forced to concede or use your super powers to dish out any dirt you could come up with on the competition. Such powers would also force people into moral dilemmas. Dilemmas like whether or not to inform the police on possible criminal activity. Most people would probably administer preferential justice, meaning protect your friends and family, and turn on people you don’t like.
Sometimes you have to be careful what you ask for. The ability to read a person’s mind is a dangerous concept. This essay can be look at as a precautionary tale. It simply comes down to a person choosing to use their influence to do well, instead of abusing their power for self gratification. We as humans don’t have the ability to read each others minds. But we do have influence as work supervisors, parents, and mentors. So do you choose to abuse your influence or do you choose to be righteous?

If I could read people's minds, I'd use that gift as a way of distinguishing my friends
from my foes. And I'd treat them accordingly, and that would entail distancing myself
from my fake friends, and maintaining my loyalty to my real friends. The ability to
read people's mind could make life so much easier.
